The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but within Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
